Jun. 21—Muhlenberg Township police had to break into a home after its owner returned from Florida to find the door lock mechanism had been changed and the windows were covered with brown paper.

The man's hunch that someone was squatting in the home Friday afternoon turned out to be correct as police discovered when an officer climbed an extension ladder so he could look inside through an uncovered window above the front door.

The homeowner said he changed the configuration of the locking mechanism before he went away. When he returned and was unable to open the door, he used a small key to access the mechanism to change the configuration, but was unsuccessful because someone else had changed it.

The officer who climbed the ladder saw food on the kitchen counter and the overall appearance of the interior was neat and orderly. When he yelled out to ask if anyone was inside, he caught a glimpse of someone shuffling into another room out of view.

He moved the ladder to an uncovered window above a back door, giving him a clear view of the living room.

He saw someone sitting on a brick step at the base of the wood-burning stove. The woman was later identified as Peggy L. Little, 57, no permanent address.

Officers' attempts to make contact with her were unsuccessful, so they requested assistance from the Berks County sheriff's K-9 team.

Deputy Sheriff Chris Gorel arrived with his K-9 partner, Vito.

Police repeatedly warned Little that if she didn't open the door, police would break in and a police dog would enter. Police eventually breached a sliding door, and Gorel entered with Vito, announcing the K-9's entrance as the dog barked.

Police found Little and took her into custody.
